Notes:

A. The reported serial prefixes are the lowest alphabetically, but production was not always alphabetical. There are situations where a “later” prefix was produced with earlier date codes, thus that gun would technically be the first release. One significant example would be that DN prefix G19 Gen 1s were produced with 4/88 date codes and were made before the AN prefix Gen 1s or the first Gen 2 19s (BM prefix). We’ve chosen to post the lowest letter combination rather than the earliest date code for each model for simplicity.

B. These are the earliest observed thus far, but with the large number of models made and the scarcity of some of the more obscure offerings, it’s always possible that you will find earlier prefixes.

C. Starting with Gen 4, models are marked with the generation i.e. “17GEN4” on the left of the slide. This is not 100% consistent over time which is why some models are listed outside of their generation (such as the first entry of 45s) but later on listed under a generational heading (46Gen6).

D. There has been a manufacturing facility in the US since the 1980s, but they did not produce complete pistols until 2009. Most models produced after that have both “USA” and “Austria” versions as marked on the slide. The sheer number of extra versions this potentially adds to the table necessitates a simple note rather than a full delineation. The guns fully produced in the US have a new serial range that began with AAAA000 and the four letter A range was reserved for the US plant. At the time, the Austrian made guns were still running with three letters (beginning with R) but have since completed the full three letter range and subsequently skipped forward to BAAA000 and continued from there (current production has reached to CHKG prefix at the time of this writing).

E. You will notice that a few of these models have an Austrian Proof marked variant listed; in fact MOST models have a proof marked version. The proofing process is mandatory safety testing in Europe so all guns were proof marked from the beginning and modern non-US destined guns still go through the process today. The variants specifically listed are from the early Gen 2 production period prior to standardization of US importation. To further delineate, all Gen 1s were proof marked (thus, no need to break out a different version) and all Gen 2s were proof marked until approximately 1989. This created a small window of proof marked Gen 2s prior to the regular importation rules took hold and all later Gen 2s (and, in fact, all other later generations) are NOT proof marked. To distinguish these guns, from later European guns (with proof marks), the frames should be marked as “Glock Inc, Smyrna, GA” as opposed to Euro guns marked “Glock GSMBH.”
